Description of Work
Ben Eyles and a team of 33 young people completed the What Graffiti? mural project on Jindabyne’s Mitre 10 building. The pop-art inspired piece features dozens of characters from history, literature, film, and video games. Each series of faces emerged from the imagination of Eyles and local young people, with truly stunning results. This mural is cleverly designed to respond to the participating demographic (young people), and the confines of the site. It is unique, young and expressive, adding a bold splash of colour to Jindabyne. What Graffiti? was funded by a Country Arts Support Program (CASP) grant through Regional Arts New South Wales, Snowy River Shire Council and through the generous donation of 48 litres of Wattyl Solarguard by Wattyl in conjunction with Jindabyne Mitre 10. Working with high school students from Jindabyne Central School, Ben developed a design concept for the graffiti-covered rear walls of the Mitre 10 building. The mural offers Snowy teens an opportunity to express themselves, and to take part in beautifying Jindabyne. The work added new life and colour to the streetscape, and complements the existing Parliament of Owls mural, just next door.

Artist Statement
The design was developed in response to the unique height and positioning of the wall, which is somewhat low and screened in places by young trees. Continuity in design was achieved by repetition of shapes and colours across the two wall panels. The wall features faces designed by individual young people. These faces feature round heads, small eyes, and button noses.
