Sustainable Lands Project - Monaro Native Grassland Coach Tour

Native Grasslands.png

Snowy Monaro Regional Council in partnership with Upper Snowy Landcare Network is excited to present the final four events in our Sustainable Lands Project. This project is supported by the Department of Agriculture Water and the Environment through funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program.

This coach tour to see Old Cooma Common and Top Hut Travelling Stock Reserve will have a fabulous day. Food and beverages will be supplied.

Please bring some warm clothes and wet weather gear just in case. Bring some drinking water for the ride but no hot foods/drinks on the coach.

The coach will be available to board at 8.50 a.m. at the bus shelter on Bombala St Cooma. It will depart at 9.00 a.m. sharp.

We will be visiting two very important natural temperate grasslands, Old Cooma Common Grassland Reserve (OCCGR) and Top Hut Travelling Stock Reserve (TH TSR). Both have contributed to our knowledge of the Monaro and, more particularly, natural temperate grasslands (NTG).

While many people bang on about trees, possibly because most Australians live along the coast where forests are more common, Australia is essentially dominated by natural grasslands (highly diverse vegetation comprising many different grasses and wildflowers) and savanna (scattered trees where the natural understorey comprise grasses and wildflowers). At the time of white settlement, eleven percent of south east Australia was natural grassland. Now only one percent of these former grasslands remain in somewhat like their original conditions.

Please note on Friday, 2 December, there is a free coach tour going from Cooma to the Mulloon property as part of this Sustainable Lands Project.

Registration will close 3 days prior to each event date or as places are filled.
