Library Initiatives

Home Library Service

The Snowy Monaro Regional Library provides a Home Library Service for library patrons who are either permanently or temporarily housebound, or would otherwise have difficulties visiting the library.

Users of the home library service have access to our fiction, non-fiction, large print, talking books, magazines, and DVD collections, as well as books in other languages from the State Library. Home Library Service orders can be delivered to you or collected from the library.

Please contact Cooma Library on (02) 6451 1630 or email libraries@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au to find out more about our Home Library Service.

Memory Books

Memory books are designed to assist older readers who are living with mild cognitive impairment, mild dementia, in stroke rehabilitation, or having difficulties concentrating. Each book is short, easy to read with 16 point font, and is accompanied by pictures.

You can borrow from our memory books collection at all library locations. Contact Cooma Library on (02) 6451 1630 or email library@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au for more information.

Junior Braille Books

Junior Braille Books are now available at each of our library locations. Young vision-impaired readers can enjoy popular children's titles like ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak.

The collection includes a braille learning kit that gives young vision-impaired readers an interactive and magnetic learning mat to assist them on their braille learning journey.

To borrow from our junior braille books collection visit your nearest library location, or contact Cooma Library on (02) 6451 1630 or library@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au.

1000 Books Before School

1000 Books Before School is a free, library initiative that is designed to ignite a love for reading in young minds, and empower parents and caregivers to build their child's literacy skills before they enter school.

How does 1000 Books Before School work?

The premise is simple: read 1000 books with your child before they start school, or before they turn six.

Kids are celebrated for their accomplishments whether they hit the target or not, with the goal of encouraging reading and literacy – not reaching a particular number.

Registration and rewards

It’s easy to sign up and get started with 1000 Books Before School. Visit Cooma, Bombala or Jindabyne libraries, or hop on the Mobile Library and the team will have you ready to go in no time.

You’ll get a starter pack, reading log for the first 50 books, and a milestone map to track your journey. Return each completed reading log to the library for milestone stickers, bookmarks, and new reading logs – all for free!

Milestone stickers are awarded every 50 books, with special bookmarks for reaching 50, 250, 500, 750, and 1000. Every budding reader that makes it to 1000 receives a special certificate to celebrate their achievement.

What counts as a book?

Reading or rereading fiction, non-fiction, picture books, easy-readers, and audiobooks all count towards the goal, as do your local library’s story time and Giggle & Bounce sessions. The program is all about the joy of reading, not strict rules, making it suitable for every family.

Contact your library or email libraries@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au for more information about this exciting new program. Visit the link for information on library location contacts and open times.

Giggle and Bounce

‘Giggle & Bounce’  is the Snowy Monaro Regional Library's literacy-through-song program that gives the youngest members of our community a fun new way to learn.

Meeting weekly at Cooma and Jindabyne libraries, this initiative is designed to boost the literacy skills of kids from infancy through to five years of age – and provide parents with early learning resources.

The weekly group program is available at both Cooma and Jindabyne Library, with sessions held every Tuesday. Cooma sessions run from 10.30am to 11am and Jindabyne sessions from 11.30am to 12pm.

Giggle and Bounce resources

As part of our Giggle and Bounce program, we’ve collated early learning literacy resources for parents and carers to access at home. Talk to our library team about our collection of parenting books, resources, and children’s books available at your library.

To speak with staff about this great initiative contact Cooma Library on (02) 6451 1630 or email libraries@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au
