The NSW Government today announced $391.3 million to deliver the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct master plan that will enable the region to become a year-round tourism destination and an economic powerhouse.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said it was an exciting day for the community who had worked closely with the government on the master plan for the Snowy Mountains precinct.

“This is the single biggest funding commitment for the NSW Government’s Special Activation Precinct initiative to date and reinforces our commitment and belief in the incredible potential we have here in the beautiful Snowy Mountains,” Mr Toole said.

“With the master plan now finalised, this huge investment will not only deliver world-class facilities and the Southern Connector Road, but also other community assets including utilities and amenity improvements.

“It’s all part of our vision for the Snowy Mountains to increase year-round tourism and create long-term job opportunities, while maintaining the natural environment and making Jindabyne an even better place for locals, workers and visitors alike.”

The Snowy Mountains precinct covers 4,879 hectares across three distinct areas, primarily centred around Jindabyne but will also benefit the alpine resorts of Thredbo, Perisher and Charlotte Pass.

Member for Monaro, Nichole Overall said the precinct will build a more economically sustainable community, which includes planning for its future population growth.

“The Snowy Special Activation Precinct will build on the region’s stunning natural endowments with the master plan outlining the blueprint to deliver long-term and sustainable growth and job opportunities for generations to come,” Mrs Overall said.

Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts said the precinct’s final master plan also addresses staff accommodation and long-term sustainable housing for the region.

“The master plan includes additional residential zoning for Jindabyne and increased bed capacity within the existing footprint of the alpine resorts, to expand housing and accommodation for residents, seasonal workers and visitors,” Mr Roberts said.

Work on the precinct’s delivery planning will now commence and will include further scoping studies. Community consultation is expected later this year and early 2023. To view the final master plan visit: www.planning.nsw.gov.au/snowymountainssap

Special Activation Precincts are part of the $4.2 billion Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund, dedicated to long-term transformative infrastructure projects to benefit regional NSW.
