Work is complete on Bombala’s brand new Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Council has brought the state-of-the-art facility online, marking the end of a major project that has secured a safe, modern, and reliable drinking water supply for one of the Snowy Monaro’s major centres.

This infrastructure project is entirely funded by a $15 million investment from the NSW Government under the Safe and Secure Water Program, which is bringing new water treatment facilities to Bombala and Delegate in 2025.

Bombala’s new WTP has now taken over water supply duties for the town full-time, following months of extensive testing and independent verification to confirm that water from the new plant meets or exceeds all drinking water standards, governmental guidelines, and safety regulations.

‘This new plant, funded by the Safe and Secure Water Program, is a big commitment that shows the Bombala community that state and local government are united in our belief in the future of the southern Snowy Monaro,’ said Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Chris Hanna.

‘Bombala now has the infrastructure in place to support this important local hub of industry and tourism as its population continues to grow.’

Member for Monaro, Steve Whan said ‘This is another great state government investment in Bombala’s future, I’m delighted to see it switched on and supplying the community.’

Incorporating the latest water treatment technology, the new plant employs automated testing and safety mechanisms to monitor water quality in real time.

These systems alert technicians on-site to any potential problems, which can then be resolved quickly and without any disruption to the water supply.

Treated water quality from the new plant passed extended preliminary testing and two separate final supply trials earlier this year, to confirm prior to the final switch-over from the old plant that each treatment stage was functioning as intended.

Bombala’s new WTP will soon be joined by the second plant funded by the NSW Government’s Safe and Secure Water Program, with the upcoming completion of the new Delegate WTP set to deliver drinkable tap water to the village for the first time in its history.
