Council resolves to seek further information from the Minister
Published on 10 January 2025
At an extraordinary meeting held on 10 January 2025, Council resolved to seek further information on matters in relation to the Minister of Local Government’s intention to issue a Performance Improvement Order (POI).
Council is seeking information on the following matters:
a) How long the Minister believes Council meetings should take, and the rationale for the Minister’s views.
b) How the large number of code of conduct complaints raised against a councillor are being managed, and their status.
c) Whether options under Section 440 of the Local Government Act have been considered instead of a PIO.
d) Why the Minister requires council to always maintain a minimum balance of $500,000 in unrestricted funds, and the rationale for the amount set.
e) Why the Minister has concerns about Council’s commitment to proceeding with the Towards Excellence Program and Financial Sustainability Review recommendations
Council has also extended an invitation to the Minister to visit the Snowy Monaro region to speak with councillors to help build a strong relationship with the Minister and for the Minister to see for himself the issues the region is facing.
