Excitement mounting for Cooma Regional Sports Centre grand opening
Published on 22 September 2023
Anticipation is growing amongst the Snowy Monaro sporting community, with construction on the Cooma Regional Sports Centre nearing completion.
Council is working with local community sporting groups, Department of Education, and internal Council teams involved in the project to determine usage, pricing, and all the finer administrative details prior to launch.
In recent weeks councillors, community sport stakeholders, senior staff members at Monaro High, and senior Council employees have toured the facility.
Council’s Recreation Planner took visitors through the grounds and inside the building site, sharing Council’s exciting vision for the future of indoor sport in our region.
The facility will provide tournament standard facilities for hosting netball, basketball, futsal, volleyball and badminton. Monaro High School students will likewise enjoy use of the new facility, located on school grounds, thanks to the shared stewardship of the site between Council and the Department of Education.
In one of Australia’s coldest climates, this major expansion to indoor sport facility quality and availability is a major boost to our region’s sporting community.
This greater availability will mean greater participation in sport throughout the year, with participation in social sports shown to have a significant positive impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of communities and community members.
The Cooma Regional Sports Centre project would not have been possible without the generous financial support of the NSW Government, and Council is privileged to have worked closely with the Department of Education.
Recent delays to supplies and labour have pushed out the opening date from October. Council looks forward to sharing details of the confirmed opening date, pricing and availability, and the official opening ceremony soon.
