Have your say: Council’s draft Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan
Published on 13 February 2023
Snowy Monaro Regional Council is asking the public for their thoughts on its first draft Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan. The plan is part of Council's effort to work towards reconciliation with First Nations people and communities.
The plan has three main goals: to improve relationships, show respect, and create opportunities. Over the next year, Council will look at its internal processes and resources to make sure they are ready for future reconciliation initiatives – inclusive of Aboriginal Organisations and Traditional Custodians.
As the first step in Reconciliation Australia’s framework for formalising reconciliation efforts, this ‘Reflect’ plan also sets up a structure for Council to engage with First Nations people who live, work, or have a cultural connection to the region.
Once finalised, this ‘Reflect’ plan will form the basis for all future reconciliation planning for Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
Through this plan, Council wants to:
- Teach staff more about First Nations culture through Cultural awareness courses;
- Think about how our work affects and has affected First Nations people;
- Improve how we work with First Nations people; and
- Recognise First Nations people as the Traditional Custodians of the area.
The draft plan was developed by a working group of Council staff, including some who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. It has been approved, with conditions, by Reconciliation Australia. Now, Council wants the public to give their feedback before the plan is finalised.
