Our region’s Draft Public Art Policy is now out on public exhibition and ready for your review. Council wants to understand what you, our community wants for the future of public art in the Snowy Monaro. The policy is designed to define and support public art.

Public art enriches the daily lives of people and communities, contributing to a strong sense of place in our towns and villages. By supporting further opportunities for the integration of public art throughout our region we will help to foster a vibrant and thriving artistic community in the Snowy Monaro, as well as creating further opportunities to increase tourism and visitation opportunities across our local government area.

Not only will this draft policy guide the public art commissioned and managed by Council, but it will be an important reference for developers and businesses looking to integrate art into their own aspects of the built environment which is becoming increasingly popular.

A key focus of the policy is the further development of a cultural economy in the Snowy Monaro. What this means is through sound policy that our Council will facilitate the provision of employment and development opportunities for local artists, designers and creative project managers.

The policy governs all public spaces and publicly-facing buildings, excluding residential developments.

Council’s dedicated volunteers working in the Arts and Culture s355 Committee were instrumental in championing and developing this draft document. Once adopted, the Committee will continue overseeing the application of the policy to all public art initiatives and the proper use of any funds collected for the purpose of public art.

The policy was endorsed for exhibition at the November 2021 meeting of Council and is now open for comment until Tuesday 26 April 2022.
