Snowy Monaro Regional Council celebrated their NAIDOC Family Fun Day at the YSpace in Cooma on Wednesday 6 July, as part of national NAIDOC Week celebrations for 2022.

The celebration was led by Ngarigo Elder Uncle John Dixon, who conducted a smoking ceremony and told stories of Ngarigo connection to Country across the Monaro and high country.

Attendees participated in an array of fun activities such as face painting, NAIDOC themed sand art, native yam daisy (murnong) planting, colouring in sheets by Ngarigo artist Sal Lavallee, along with a delicious BBQ lunch.

They were also treated to a wonderful Didgeridoo performance by Dunghutti man Uncle Lewis Campbell.

Local Service providers shared important information with our community stalls through their stalls, including very popular Butt Out Boondah information and resources.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council was pleased to partner with YMCA, Wellways, Mission Australia, Grand Pacific Health, and Office of Regional Youth to deliver this fantastic cultural community event.

This NAIDOC Local Grants activity received grant funding from the Australian Government.

Special thanks to the Y for their support and use of the YSpace, and to everyone who attended.
