New resource for pet owners following increase in dog attacks on stock

Recent weeks have seen a concerning rise in dog attacks across the Snowy Monaro, with a significant number of these attacks affecting livestock. The surge has prompted a call on behalf of the region’s graziers for pet owners to take greater care in ensuring their dogs are properly secured and controlled.

‘These attacks are not just devastating for the animals involved, but also for our farmers who are already facing significant pressures,’ says Michele Rogers, Coordinator Public Health and Environment at Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

‘We're urging all dog owners to take immediate action to ensure their pets are securely contained and under control at all times.’

Under the Companion Animals Act 1998, dog owners are legally required to prevent their dogs from escaping their property. Failure to comply can result in significant fines and penalties. In cases of serious attacks, dogs may be declared 'Nuisance', 'Menacing', or 'Dangerous'.

To help address this issue, Council has today rolled out improved community education and informational resources on the Snowy Monaro Regional Council website to help pet owners across the region do the right thing.

Residents are reminded that:

  • Dogs must be microchipped, registered, and wear a collar displaying the owner’s contact details
  • When off their property, dogs must be on a lead and under effective control, except in designated off-leash areas
  • Any dog attacks should be reported immediately to Council’s ranger services team on 1300 345 345

‘We're committed to working with our community to address this issue,’ said Ms Rogers. ‘By taking these steps, we can create a safer environment for both animals and residents across our region.’
